There are lots of different hairstyles and everybody has unique hair. People have different hairstyles which can be influenced by fashion, culture or practically anything. Having an unusual hairstyle can really make you stand out. A hairstlye can be seen as a statement of your invdividuality and your personality, and adding different colours or dying hair has been in practice for over four thousand years.

The Tonsure


The tonsure is a hairstyle worn mainly by monks and other religious groups. The cut it meant to signify the person’s rejection of world fashion. It is also intended to imitate the wisdom of old age such as when some men go bald later in life.
Coincidentally, the majority of the people who voted this haircut into the top 10 were male and over 40 years of age.

The beehive

The beehive is a womens up hairdo. it was popular in the 1950s and 1960’s and is also known as a – B52 after a military aeroplane, as the shape of the planes nose is similar to the beehive. An extreme example can be seen on marge Simpson. This hairstyle has been popularised in the year of 2010 by Amy Winehouse.

The Afro

The Afro is a hairs that is usually worn by people with very curly hair. the hair extends straight from the the head in a shape of a ball and can grow very large. Some people hair grows onto this hairstyle naturally as their hair curls together forming very tight ringlets.

The Bob


The bob is a short hairstyle with a fringe, and the hairstyle was made popular in the 1920s by flappers (young women who floated authority). since then it has been going in and out of fashion many times. the 1960’s sees the biggest revival of the bob by the famous hairstylist, Vidal Sasoon.

The pompadour

A style that was very popular in the 1950s, it is commonly associated with early rock and roll artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Hollywoods best known actors also chose the style. This hairstyle is created by flattening the sides of the hair at the front into a quiff. The style usually requires wax to hold it in position.

The Mullet


The mullet is a hairstyle where the hair is cut short on the top and sides but left long at the back. This hairstlye was popularised by pop star David Bowie in the 1970s but was origanally worn by viking fishermen to keep the backs of there heads warm while out at sea. The hairstlye took its name from the fish they caught which was called mullet.

The Ponytail

The pontail is a style where all the hair is pulled together and tied with a band to keep it alltogether. named afte the wy a horse’s tail looks. it is a very popualr hairstyle for young women and sometimes men.

The Mohawk


The Mohawk is a style that combines long hair on the top and back that is spiked up, with shaved sides. The hairstyle was originally worn by native American tribes. It became popular in the 1970s with the rise of punk music, and  was commonly dyed bright colours.

Victory rolls


This hairstyle was very popular on the 1940s and celebrated the end of WW2 – a voctory roll was originally a term used for a manouvere done by fighter planes in the war. For this hairstlye, the hair is rolled up on top of the head and help with hairpins.

Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are locks that are made up of lots of strands of hair that have grown together. Hair naturally grows like this if its left uncombed. Althought dreadlocks date back further than the rastafarians of jamaica (a religious movement), it was this group that made them popula
